Rare live broadcast of Medtner's Second Piano Concerto played by one of its main champions. Romanza: Andante con moto 27:18

Medtner - Nikolai Demidenko, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Jerzy Maksymiuk - Piano Concerto No 2 In C Minor, Piano Concerto No 3 In E Minor (Album).

The pianist Nikolai Demidenko released a remarkable collection of CD's of piano music on Hyperion in the early to mid 1990's. This reissue of a collection of the piano music of Nikolai Medtner on Helios (Hyperion) is in my opinion exceptional and a CD I find I am forever returning to. Give this CD a few plays and it is difficult not to be smitten by the music. In the performance of this Medtner selection, a music which is rich with beautiful melodies and wonderful harmonic progressions, Nikolai Demidenko excells with a playing that is both sensitive yet fully encompasses the dynamic.

Nikolai Demidenko (born 1 July 1955, Anisimovo ) is a Russian-born classical pianist. Demidenko studied at the Gnessin State Musical College with Anna Kantor and at the Moscow Conservatoire under Dmitri Bashkirov. He was a finalist at the 1976 Montreal International Piano Competition and the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Competition. He taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK, where he has been a resident since 1990.

The Medtner Piano Concerto Nº 2 played by Nikolai Demidenko with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir Fedoseyev had a great success in Ljubljana. BTW: Nikolai Demidenko recorded Medtner´s Piano Concerto No. 2 y N. with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jerzy Maksymiuk for Hyperion Records. This CD received GRAMOPHONE AWARD WINNER 1992 and LUISTER -CD VAN HET JAAR 1992.

Nikolai Demidenko also plays regularly in the Great Performers series at the Barbican Concert Hall and in Autumn 2006 he returns to the International Piano Series at London's South Bank Centre. Current and forthcoming concerto engagements include performances with the Adelaide, Bern, Castilla e Léon, Christchurch, Granada, Kristiansand, Lahti, Macao, Melbourne, RTE & Singapore symphony orchestras; the Belgrade, Bremen & Bucharest philharmonic orchestras; Hallé Orchestra; Madrid Community Orchestra, Queensland Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra. Nikolai Demidenko has a flourishing relationship with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov, with whom he has performed in Berlin, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Geneva, Glasgow, London, Lugano, Manchester and St. Petersburg.
