George Hege Hamilton IV (July 19, 1937 – September 17, 2014) was an American country musician. He began performing in the late 1950s as a teen idol, switching to country music in the early 1960s. Hamilton was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on July 19, 1937. While a 19-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hamilton recorded "A Rose and a Baby Ruth" for a Chapel Hill record label, Colonial Records

George Hamilton IV became known as "The International Ambassador of Country Music" due to his tireless efforts in "spreading the gospel" of Folk-Country Music around the world. George Hamilton IV, whose gentle demeanor and soothing folk-country vocal style earned him worldwide acclaim, died Wednesday (September 17th) at a Nashville hospital, following a heart attack which he suffered on Saturday. He was 77. A 50-year veteran of the Grand Ole Opry, Hamilton was known as the International Ambassador of Country Music, having toured successfully throughout Europe, Asia, the Soviet Union and Australia. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Hamilton scored a major hit in 1956 with A Rose and a Baby Ruth. He did, however, follow up the Abilene album with one called Fort Worth, Dallas or Houston. In 1965, Hamilton was the first American singer to record a hit penned by Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.

The singer and guitarist, who began performing as a teenager in the 1950s, had suffered a major heart attack at the weekend. In the later phase of his career, Hamilton, who was born in North Carolina, concentrated on gospel music and making recordings of inspiration recitations, a type of spiritual song. He also became a regular guest singer with evangelist Billy Graham on his many rallies around the world. He was a regular visitor to Scotland, and in 2004 produced an album of songs called Hamilton's Other Country. In the 1990s, he made a foray into stage work, playing the narrator in a production of Pasty Cline The Musical for five years, including a run in London's West End.
