Mother Popcorn (You Got To Have a Mother For Me)" (Pt. 1 & 2) - James Brown (1969) The song that gave his name to the Belgian Popcorn genre! The "mother" of the song's title was Brown's honorific for "a big butt". Album: It's a Mother. 1969, dancing 'De Oude Hoeve' in Vrasene, Belgium, started with a real discobar with mainly rare soul and funk. Ska was an essential part of every night's music setlist. Although the song "Mother Popcorn" itself is not on that album but on the album "It's A Mother"). It was the first giant dancing ever and the rest is history as we know it today as (Belgian) Popcorn. The Belgian Popcorn style was a sound with one common factor: the rhythm of the songs, whether it was Soul, R&B, Ska, Funk, Latin or Latin-jazz. Most of the songs (say 80 to 90%) were played in a slower tempo by changing the pitch to have a medium slow groove that was the signature of the Popcorn style.

James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, musician, record producer and bandleader. A progenitor of funk music and a major figure of 20th century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Soul". In a career that lasted 50 years, he influenced the development of several music genres. Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia.

This song is by James Brown and appear. n the album Sex Machine (1970). on the album 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! (1991). on the compilation album 50th Anniversary Collection (2003).

The Popcorn" is a 1969 instrumental written and recorded by James Brown. It was the first of several records Brown made inspired by the popular dance of the same name. Released as a single on King Records, it charted R&B and Pop. It also appeared as the title track of an album released the same year.

Mother Popcorn" has a beat and structure similar to Brown's 1967 hit "Cold Sweat", but a faster tempo and a greater amount of rhythmic activity (including a lot of agitated 16th note movement from the horn section) give it a more frenetic quality than the earlier song. Critic Robert Christgau singled out "Mother Popcorn" as the turning point in Brown's funk music in which he "began to concern himself more and more exclusively with rhythmic distinctions  . On January 13, 1969 Brown recorded a song at the RCA Studios in Los Angeles, California under the title "You Got to Have a Mother for Me".
