Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a song by American rock band Nirvana. It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind (1991), released on DGC Records. Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's biggest hit in most countries, placing high on music industry charts around the world in 1991 and 1992. The unexpected success propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts at the start of 1992, an event often marked as the point where grunge entered the mainstream.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was, along with Come as You Are, one of a few new songs that had been written since Nirvana’s first recording sessions with producer Butch Vig in 1990. Prior to the start of the Nevermind recording sessions, the band sent Vig a rough cassette demo of song rehearsals that included Teen Spirit. While the sound of the tape was wildly distorted due to the band playing at a loud volume, Vig could pick out some of the melody and felt the song had promise

Smells Like Teen Spirit was considered the most well known song by the band, Nirvana. It has been voted the best song of the 1990s on several music programs including VH1's program Best Song Of The 90's. Smells Like Teen Spirit", was voted by Rolling Stone Magazine and MTV as the 3rd best pop song out of 100 of all time. Kurt Cobain has often said the this song was just a big pop intro for Nevermind.

Nirvana’s hit Smells Like Teen Spirit embodies the culture of the angsty, grunge youth in the early 1990’s-one marked by a generation struggling with identity. However, flipping the track from its original key of F-minor into a major scale weirdly turns it into a summery pop-punk jam. Vimeo user Sleep Good used major scale to transform the song, taking listeners to an alternate reality in which they can imagine Kurt Cobain cruising down Pacific Coast Highway. The rock element is definitely still present, but the song becomes a little less Smashing Pumpkins and a lot more Weezer.
