Yervant Harry Babasin, Jr. (19 March 1921 – 21 May 1988) was an American jazz bassist. His nickname was "The Bear". Artwork by Pierre Babasin, music recorded in 1952, album digitally remastered and released in 1978. In 1947, he recorded the first cello solos known in jazz music, with the Dodo Marmarosa Trio. In later cello ensembles he added a bass player. He and Oscar Pettiford did a session together with two cellos. In the mid-1950s, he put together his own ensemble, Harry Babasin & the Jazzpickers, who played regularly at the Purple Onion in Hollywood; this ensemble released three albums.

Artist: Roy Harte Harry Babasin The Arnold Ross Trio. (19 March 1921 Dallas, Texas - 21 May 1988 Los Angeles) was an American jazz bassist.

Harry Babasin and Oscar Pettiford had been playing the off nite at The Haig as noted in this ad in the Daily News from April 16, 1953. Oscar Pettiford had become interested in the cello while he was with Woody Herman in 1949. Harry Babasin was an active member of the jazz scene in Hollywood at the time and had been holding regular modem jazz jam sessions at the Trade Winds in Inglewood. Harry Babasin and Roy Harte were friends from the times they had spent in the same bands in the 1940s.

This album captured the second set (Bird was late arriving), and probably would have been forever lost to history had it not surfaced in San Diego in 1990. This is an informally taped jam session at the Trade Winds in Inglewood (a Los Angeles suburb). It was taped by an amateur music enthusiast (Bob Andrews of nearby Orange County) at the behest of the bassist - Harry Babasin. The session took place in June 1952. What impresses me most about this album is the pure white hot energy by the ensemble. This isn't the Chet Baker of ballads, but a man possessed and spurred on by the rest of the band. Sonny Criss holds his own with Bird, but there is no mistaking who the master of alto is when Parker does come in on his horn. The line-up is Charlie.
