You're a Big Boy Now", 28 minutes and 9 seconds long, suffers from the same flaws as the previous soundtrack album but somehow manages to exacerbate these flaws. The songs are all very brief and very forgettable. Hit single "Darling Be Home Soon" is the only decent song on the album. It's reminiscent of the old Lovin' Spoonful days and sounds like something that would be on "Daydream" with its calming guitar and simplistic bass line, with the addition of an orchestra that adds a whole other level to the song. The lyrics don't give much to offer, but when put in context with the movie they work.

The Lovin' Spoonful was one of the most successful pop/rock groups to have jug band and folk roots, and nearly half the songs on their first album were modernized versions of blues standards. Their popularity revived interest in the form, and many subsequent jug bands cite them as an inspiration. Yanovsky left the band after the soundtrack album You're a Big Boy Now was released in May 1967, primarily due to a drug bust in San Francisco, in which he was arrested for possession of marijuana and pressured by police to name his supplier. You're a Big Boy Now, the soundtrack to a film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, did generate a couple of good songs, the title tune and the lovely "Darling Be Home Soon," while Everything Playing yielded the joyous "She Is Still a Mystery" and "Six O'Clock," but these were really the last great gasp of a truly great American. Serious fans of the group will want to have these for the sake of completion, and this two-fer is a good way to get both of them at once, but taken together, it's a swan song.

And the great big world daddy threw before you With the pretty faces and the claws that tore you And it's all so different when you get to sources And love will make you strong as a team of wild horses. I know there's things you never thought before That have to do with walkin' out old doors You've been prepared as long as time allowed
