Solitude Standing Lyrics. Suzanne Vega – Solitude Standing. Solitude stands by the window She turns her head as I walk in the room I can see by her eyes she's been waiting Standing in the slant of the late afternoon. Solitude stands in the doorway And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time we've met. And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame. And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight" And she says "I've come to lighten this dark heart" And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say "I've never thought of finding you here".
The songs on Solitude Standing, Suzanne Vega's second album, had years listed beside them on the lyric sheet, so you could see that some of them dated back to 1978. But that bold admission heralded the album's triumph - its diversity was what made it so good. Partially, that was because the old songs were the equal of anything on the first album - tunes like the a cappella slice-of-life "Tom's Diner" and the warmly romantic "Gypsy" simply wouldn't have fit thematically on the debut
Solitude Standing is the critically acclaimed sophomore album from Suzanne Vega. Released in 1987, it was a story of songs in which some of them had been written as far back as 1978. Singles like 'Tom's Diner' and 'Luka' were major hits for the artist and her development as a singer shone through. The album reached on the US Billboard Top 200, with 'Luka' reaching on the Hot 100. Solitude Standing was produced by Steve Addabbo and Patti Smith’s former guitarist Lenny Kaye, who with Steven Miller had overseen the debut set. And although the majority of the new record was written after Vega’s 1985 emergence, its best-known songs predated her major label debut. The original, a cappella ‘Tom’s Diner,’ which opened the album, was composed in 1981. Critics lined up to praise the new album’s artistry and song craft, with the Philadelphia Enquirer calling it Suzanne Vega’s coming of age. Thom Duffy of the Orlando Sentinel described the dreamy sound that serves well her unique musings. Chris Willman in the Los Angeles Times heard an absorbing second albu. ull of characters whose sharp self-awareness is shaped by their isolation. Solitude Standing has remained close to Vega’s heart, and to her audience’s.
