You can use a colon to draw attention to many things in your writing. The categories listed below often overlap, so don't worry too much about whether your intended use of the colon fits one category perfectly. You can use a colon to connect two sentences when the second sentence summarizes, sharpens, or explains the first. Both sentences should be complete, and their content should be very closely related. Note that if you use colons this way too often, it can break up the flow of your writing.
A colon precedes an explanation or an enumeration, or list. A colon is also used with ratios, titles and subtitles of books, city and publisher in bibliographies, biblical citations between chapter and verse, and for salutations in business letters and other formal letter writing, and often to separate hours and minutes.

It's no accident that a semicolon is a period atop a comma. Like commas, semicolons indicate an audible pause-slightly longer than a comma's, but short of a period's full stop. A colon is a more significant pause than a semi-colon. It is often used to contrast two parts of a sentence: It's official: McClaren makes the worst start by an England manager.
Tone and mood both deal with the emotions centered around a piece of writing. Though they seem similar and can in fact be related causally, they are in fact quite different. Tone is the author's attitude toward a subject. While journalistic writing theoretically has a tone of distance and objectivity, all other writing can have various tones.
