The roots of Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus" stretch back to an 1851 farce in German by Robert Benedix, "Die Gefängnis" ("The Prison"). In 1872, that admirable pair of hacks, Meilhac and Halévy, cobblers of libretti for both Offenbach and Bizet, converted the old German play into a French vaudeville as "Le réveillon" ("The Revel" or perhaps "The Christmas Eve Party"). Gueden, Lipp and Patzak are one and all very fine singers but they fall just short of matching Schwarzkopf, Streich and Gedda vocally. On the other hand, each one is warmer, funnier and generally more convincing as Rosalinde, Adele and Eisenstein, respectively. It has, over the years become encrusted with the idiotic notion that Alfred is actually Alfredo, a completely over-the-top caricature of an Italian tenor. Dermota has nothing of that foolshness. He is restrained and superb.

Recording Venue: Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Wien. Before he was 30 he had conducted Der Rosenkavalier at the State Opera; Strauss himself was co-director of the house at the time, and came on stage to tell Krauss, ‘Consider yourself engaged forthwith. When Decca made this recording in September 1950, the city and its inhabitants were still recovering from wartime privations just as Strauss’s first audience had been. Clemens Krauss conducts the Vienna Philharmonic with the lightest of touches and fields a sweet toned Rosalinde in Hilde Gueden and a knowing Eisenstein from Patzak.

A year later, the success of Fledermaus prompted Decca to record the same composer's The Gypsy Baron with another all Viennese cast, Clemens Krauss, the Vienna State Opera Chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic. Again everything sounds just right, but for some reason the exquisite duet with chorus, "Wer uns getraut," sung by Patzak and Zadek doesn't have the repeat-a major loss.
