Slick Rick's reputation as hip-hop's greatest storyteller hangs on his classic debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, one of the most influential rap records of the late '80s - for better and worse. Most of the production is standard early Def Jam, but Rick's style on the mic is like no one else's. His half-British accent and odd, singsong cadences often overshadow the smoothness of his delivery, but there's no overlooking the cleverness of his lyrics.

The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick’ solidified the New York rapper as one of hip-hop’s most dynamic personalities and the world’s greatest storyteller. Published on. November 1, 2018. While Slick Rick’s previous lyrical displays were confined to the visions of others, he now had an entire album with which to flex his storytelling muscle – and he did just that. The album’s most commercially successful hit is ‘Children’s Story’, a cautionary tale framed as a bedtime story. Unlike much of the gangster rap that would soon dominate, ‘Children’s Story’ didn’t glorify street life; it spoke to the realities of its hustlers and, most importantly, their fatal downfall. The music for ‘Children’s Story’ would give Slick Rick’s labelmate Montell Jordan his biggest hit seven years later.
Slick Rick was quick to change this by laying down the 12 Commandments of hip-hop storytelling, also known as The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. From the release of this album onward up until this very day, if there's a hip-hop track out there that tells a tale, you can bet that it wouldn't sound the same if The Great Adventures of Slick Rick had not been released. In this album the Ruler, with his unique light British accent, manages to rhyme phrases and words yet to be heard of at that time
