Kraldjursanstalten is a bit of an acquired taste. I listened to this album 3 years ago and never wanted to listen again. Last night it didn't sound bad.

During that time, the band put out one five song EP, and then followed it up with a full album; both are included on this reissue. They play an extremely busy art-punk with only bass, guitars, and drums, although both drums and guitars are multi-tracked on most of the songs, resulting in a sound that's more like a five piece. Maybe if one could imagine Trout Mask era Beefheart without the Captain and his blues, with a punk singer substituting and a thirty pound brick on the accelerator.

This CD combines the contents of the group's first EP (originally released in 1980) and the full-length album that followed a year later. The surface chaos of the band's sound masks elaborate structure and discipline; although early compositions like "Det Loser Sig Atematiskt" and "Ta Over" may come across as disjointed and clattery, close listens will reveal how tightly arranged the vocal and instrumental parts are. The full-length album brings in marginally better production and even tighter playing, but an overall sound that is no less crazy on its surface.

Their 1980 five track 12 debut Nu är det allvar!!! (subtitled Som ett fyllo i ett minfält, like a drunk in a mine field ) is good, but fulfills their potential only partly, as in standout tracks Det löser sig atematiskt and Fet och feg. An unreleased Tonkraft show, recorded in July 1980 six months after Nu är det allvar!!! confirms that Kräldjursanstalten got better fast. A further six months on, their spastic, tructed music came into full bloom with Voodoo Boogie.
