Album · 2011 · 7 Songs. Strange Creatures Gow. Dance.

Strange Creatures is the third studio album by British rock band, Drenge. The album was released on 22 February 2019 through Infectious Records. The album was first announced on 29 October 2018 following the release of a four track EP titled, Autonomy.

This new album by UK garage rock band Drenge starts out strong. The in reverb drenched songs with abstract lyrics create a obscure and hollow vibe. Unfortunately further in the track listing (around the album’s title track) the songs pack less punch and sound more forgettable, even boring. The dark theme of this album has it’s charms but isn’t that exciting all the way through. Best track: This Dance.

Strange Creatures closes with ‘When I Look Into Your Eyes’, an acoustic guitar led blues/rock hybrid that almost seems incongruent amongst the heavier tracks featured on the album. The song is a peaceful, if not misplaced, conclusion to a heavy but engaging album.

Strange Creatures’ is like a trip through a dark, weird, small town where outsiders stick out like sore thumbs. It’s a place that’s dimly lit by fading fluorescent lights, letting the shadows encroach more and more; a perfect horror movie setting where otherwise normal scenarios seem fated to turn sour. The pair’s third album has plenty of peaks but it also has its troughs. They’re hooky and poppy, but something about them feels off and, placed next to each other on the tracklisting, they feel too repetitive to belong on a record this daring and bristling with ideas.
