Before listening to Takahiro Kawaguchi and Utah Kawasaki's Amorphous Spores, one first experiences Hirozumi Takeda's beautiful design for the album. The photographs that adorn the packaging are alluring precisely for how they draw out specific qualities from various objects-the shape of the mushrooms, the contrast in color between them and the dirt, the general form and movement of the leaves-and bring them to the forefront via thoughtful framing. When one lifts the disc from its tray, an upside down mushroom is revealed. It's unexpected and equal parts charming and hilarious. It all captures the essence of Amorphous Spores perfectly and acts to prepare one for engaging with the music. When "12:32" begins, a low rumbling is heard.

So, James has once again produced an incredible album that evokes a strong sense of place and finds the beauty in our often times ugly reality. 3. Prurient - Frozen Niagara Falls. Frozen Niagara Falls is the sound of Dominick Fernow grappling with romance and religion against the backdrop of a frostbitten urban hellscape. If you make it through the subdued intro of Amorphous Spores, you will be rewarded with some of the most mind-bending EAI to be crafted in years. The marriage of Kawaguchi's homemade instruments and Kawasaki's electronics has resulted in something playful and seriously far out, at least to my ears. 5. Ikue Mori - In Light of Shadows.

Amorphous Spores’ is the name of the Takahiro Kawaguchi & Utah Kawasaki’s debut release together (out on Erstwhile Records), and it serves as a near perfect description for their music. Made by bonding Kawaguchi’s air horns and home-made appliances with Kawasaki’s electronic devices, the two are able to blend familiar ingredients but make them grow into something strikingly strange, dramatic and often beautiful.
