Growth is often incremental and on the surface, the Spider Bags don't sound as if they've changed much on their fourth album, Frozen Letter, even though it marks their debut on a new (and bigger) label, Merge Records, and their first effort since guitarist Gregg Levy moved from full-time to part-time status with the group, appearing on just four. of the album's eight tunes.

Spider Bags Frozen Letter (Merge). Seemingly aesthetically divided into 2 sides, the first 4 tunes here are quick, rockin’ and filled with garage-rock playfulness and twangy rock-a-billy fun. More in line with their early 7″‘s, the guitars are fuzzy, the pace is frenetic and the volume is cranked. Spider Bags have already proved they can write great singles, and though they never really intended to release this album, it stands as a testament to the skill and diversity of one of the most interesting bands playing a loose version of today’s garage-rock.

With Frozen Letter, the North Carolina trio dives headfirst into the psychedelic end of the garage rock pool. The result is their most cohesive set of songs to date, with a tighter and more refined lyrical focus. This is a summer bummer party record, filled with anger and sorrow and sing-along derision. Spider Bags aren't afraid to lead with their best stuff, and the one/two punch of "Back With You Again in the World", and "Japanese Vacation" is a combo that's hard to beat. And fall they do, again and again. Yet it's in these most human of moments that Spider Bags reach their greatest heights. As this short album winds down, they reach their pinnacle on the transcendently chooglin' "We Got Problems". A hitherto unimagined blend of Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Meat Puppets, the track is so familiar as to seem familial.

LP pressed to red translucent vinyl; coupon for full album download included Formed in 2005, Chapel Hill, North Carolina's Spider Bags were largely a revolving cast, with only Dan McGee (guitars, vocals) persevering through the various incarnations of the band. But during the 2011 recording of Shake My Head, the current lineup consisting of Steve Oliva (bass) and Rock Forbes (drums) was finally solidified. Building upon the foundation laid down by its predecessor, Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over.

Entitled �Frozen Letters,� The Spider Bags�s upcoming offering will be counted as the band�s fourth full-length album, it will be dropped on the 5th of August in US, and it will follow the band�s 2012 highly acclaimed �Shake My Head� LP. �Frozen Letters� features eight tracks, and it was recorded in just three days by Wesley Wolfe, the band�s engineer/producer. Two tracks have preceded the album�s release, tracks entitled �Back with You Again in the World� and �Japanese Vacation

Frozen Letter, the band’s Merge debut, is a small album. At eight songs in 34 minutes, it’s the band’s shortest, but it’s also perhaps the best distillation and presentation of their sound, coming off like a stranger, dreamier sister album to Shake My Head. Like all Spider Bags albums, it feels instantly familiar, like it has always been in your head waiting to hear itself played back to your ears. McGee’s voice continues to do that thing it does both so well and so distinctly, a crooning drawl.
