Pell Mell was an instrumental rock combo, formed in 1980 in Portland, Oregon. The original members were Arni May, guitar, and Jon-Lars Sorenson, bass, from the Portland avant-garde group UHF, and from local Reed College Bill Owen on guitar, and Bob Beerman on drums. This iteration of the group performed and recorded the songs on their first EP release in 1981, Rhyming Guitars, which gave the group exposure over the nation's college radio network

Pell Mell biography Not to be confused with a 1980s American band of the same name, Pell Mell was a symphonic band from Marburg, Germany (Marburg is also the name of the debut album). The usual lineup changes occurred over time, and the band began to disintegrate after 1978's "Only a Star. Thomas Schmitt formed the '80s style rock band Skyrider, with former band mate Otto Pusch. They released one self-titled album, and then took back the name Pell Mell. This incarnation released "Moldau" in 1981. However, the old magic was gone, and that is where the Pell Mell story ends.

By the time of Interstate's recording, David Spalding had been established as a new key and core member, and the resultant effort of the quartet was a striking and often emotional take on instrumental rock. Pell Mell's unsurprising ability to self-produce and engineer, helped out by the abilities of Tim O'Heir as well, resulted in a full-sounding, dramatic album that, even so, couldn't have been expected to be a commercial breakout by the label. As a mighty fine example of Pell Mell's talents, though, it couldn't be finer.

Although I am a fan of many of the guitar heroes (satriani, beck, etc) this album has no pyrotechnics at all, just solid, well played melodies and grooves. Sometimes some interesting "art of noise" stuff thrown in for good measure, but always in good measure. Definitely recommended - unfortunately none of the other CDs in the Pell Mell catalog have the same feel as this CD. I bought "Star City" and "Flow".
