Ted Hawkins (October 28, 1936 – January 1, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter born in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was an enigmatic figure for most of his career. He split his time between his adopted hometown of Venice Beach, California, where he was a mostly anonymous street performer, and Europe and Australia, where he and his songs were better known and well received in clubs and small concert halls.

Calling Ted Hawkins a blues artist unnecessarily narrows the breath of the man’s repertoire and reach. Closer to a modern troubadour his songbook drew on a wealth of music and influences. Busking on the sidewalks of Venice Beach for years he cultivated a sound steeped in the blues and rock and roll, Stax-era soul, American folk, Country and spirituals as well. But unlike Hendrix, a return to the streets and anonymity marked his return to the States in the early 90s. Only in 1993, after getting a lucky break from Geffen records, did his music find widespread American acclaim.
A thumbnail version of the Ted Hawkins story goes something like this: Southern black man braves poverty and Mississippi's notorious Parchman Farm prison. He moves west and camps out on Venice Beach, where he sings for change, ultimately securing a major-label contract. A critically acclaimed album (1994's The Next Hundred Years is released. Months later, at age 59, he suffers a stroke and dies. Quite a tale, but that isn't the half of it. The illegitimate son of a teenage alcoholic prostitute, Hawkins claimed he was abused as a child
Ted Hawkins (born October 28, 1936, Biloxi, Mississippi, USA -died January 1, 1995, Los Angeles, California, USA) was an American blues and soul-blues singer and guitarist. On The Boardwalk (The Venice Beach Tapes) (Album). The Best Of Ted Hawkins (Cass, Comp). Against Odds Inc. none.
Ted Hawkins was a brilliant performer and songwriter whose life and career were pock-marked with tragedy and disappointment. Petty crime kept Hawkins in and out of jail in his younger days, and while he later enjoyed popular and critical success in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan, in his native California Hawkins supported himself by playing for tips along the Venice Beach boardwalk, where his rough but deeply soulful singing style always drew a crowd .
