Angels and Daemons at Play is the sixth full-length studio album by the Norwegian rock-band Motorpsycho. The album was originally released as three EP's; "Babyscooter" (released January 27), "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" (February 3) and "Lovelight" (February 10). Only 500 copies were pressed of each. It was later also released as a single CD and double-LP.

Angels and Demons at Play is a jazz album by Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra. Side one was recorded in 1960, including two tracks taken from the mammoth session either at Hall Recording Company or at the RCA Studios (both in Chicago), around 17 June 1960, whilst the tracks on side two were recorded at the RCA studios, Chicago, around February 1956.

The fourth of Motorpsycho’s expanded archival sets revisits 1997’s Angels and Daemons at Play – a chronological and developmental follow-on from the earlier Blissard set. The box contains 6 CDs but it’s actually quite a tidy package, with very little replication of material. The rarities include a couple of album outtakes, also with Deathprod and ohm, which are less experimental than the Have Spacesuit cuts, but more so than the material on the other EPs, on which the most outré thing is the untitled banjo-based ‘joke’ track that ends the album proper, and which I could happily live without. In a similar vein but more welcome, there’s a trad romp through Syk, a song originally recorded – with a more contemporary electronic sound, ironically – by cult Norwegian children’s entertainers Knutsen and Ludvigsen.

The album displays the two strengths of Motorpsycho again. The first is their knack for good songwriting, the second is their open-mindedness and eclecticism which allowed them to move forward with every album and which makes all of their albums an adventurous listen. The highlights on this one are heavy rock anthems such as Heartattack Mac and Timothy's Monster.

Angels and Demons at Play. SongMeanings is a place for discussion and discovery.
