End of an Era is a DVD and double CD from Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. Nuclear Blast recorded their live performance at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland, on October 21, 2005, the final concert of a long worldwide tour for their album Once. During the concert the band was joined on-stage by John Two-Hawks, who performed "Stone People" from his album Honor as an introduction to "Creek Mary's Blood", which featured his voice and cedar flutes.

Listen free to Nightwish – End of an Era (Dark Chest of Wonders, Planet Hell and more). End of an Era is a live recording of a Nightwish performance at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland on October 21, 2005, and released in 2006. Both an album and a DVD of the performance were released. The title "End of an Era" was chosen because this was the final concert of a long worldwide tour for the album Once; however, to fans it was more significantly the final concert with vocalist Tarja Turunen, who had been with the band for nearly a decade

Perhaps it's no surprise then that End of an Era beings with "Red Warrior" from The Last Samurai booming over arena speakers while thousands of fans roar their approval. It's a dramatic introduction for a band that specializes in theatrics, all of which are captured on the album. There's the crowd, the blast of pyrotechnics, the echo of the music filling a cavernous arena. Recording a band this layered (Guitars! Drums! Vocals! Keyboards! Backing tracks!) in a setting like this is always a risky venture, but the sound quality on End of an Era is exceptional; it manages.

Nightwish recorded End Of An Era -live release yesterday evening in Hartwall-Arena, Helsinki. As you can imagine, the atmosphere in the Arena was wild but also quite blue. This was the ending for a one and a half year lasting Once -World Tour. Nightwish wishes to thank everybody for an unbelievable tour. Unfortunately the title End Of An Era also holds a deeper meaning. The open letter, which was given to Tarja after the show, tells it all. Read the open letter to Tarja.

End of an Era does feel a bit abrupt and one-sided for the final live performance with original singer Tarja, even if the tour was in-support of the then-new album. The cracks of the concert show most when heard strictly through the ear, but are very easy to forget when watching (especially for the first time). If the band retained their most familiar line-up to this day, then End of an Era would be a fairly negligible consideration. However, given skeptical indications of what direction the band might be heading after the mixed bag that was Dark Passion Play, this probably is the best chance.
