Dense, uncompromising and utterly thrilling, this debut album is an explosive introduction to four (decidedly male) Dubliners who bring an unflinching post-rock eye and a crackle of dark wit to frontman Dara Kiely’s personal experiences with anxiety and depression. But it's Paul –with its rumbling surf licks and pogoing beat–that's probably the most potent reminder that, goofy moniker aside, Girl Band should be taken very seriously.
Dublin four-piece Girl Band is one such act, slicing up parts of everything from no wave to techno, using guitar and drums like power tools as much as instruments. But that implies that they’re consciously taking influence from bands like Big Black, Throbbing Gristle, James Chance and the Contortions, Talking Heads, and The Chemical Brothers, while in interviews, they’ve denied influences (either things they don’t know or don’t like) as often or more than noting them.
Girl Band’s debut album Holding Hands With Jamie, which came out in September, offers an adrenaline buzz approximately akin to sitting in a shopping trolley and preparing to career wildly down a hill. Girl Band, photographed in Dublin. So the band turned instead to New York no-wave acts like James Chance. We leave Peter’s Pub for Bow Lane Studios, where Holding Hands With Jamie was recorded, and check out the legendary Whelan’s venue through which all Dublin bands must pass. Fox recalls Kiely getting naked to attack the vocals on album opener Um Bongo and it feels revealing – deadly serious intent bound up in frivolity. It makes even more sense when Kiely describes the mental health issues that have alternately plagued and fed his creativity
Is Girl Band’s debut album some kind of loud - very loud - obnoxious joke? The Dublin four piece are no fans of convention. Their sound is angular, atonal and harsh. Weirdest of all, Girl Band are very, very serious but very, very funny indeed and like some kind of maddening puzzle, Holding Hands with Jamie - a title that is both innocent and menacing - reveals its terrible beauty gradually, ineluctably and, despite the maelstrom of contrariness, majestically. It starts with Umbongo and with the clank and whirr of factory line monotony before exploding into chaos - a glorious one-fingered salute to mass-produced homogenised music. The petulant vocals on Pears for Lunch accelerate into a frenzied state of nervous overdrive as guitars chainsaw around a lost.

Album title: Holding Hands With Jamie. Release date: 25 Sep. Having checked that yes, this is an album – and not a cake made by hyper-active children with every conceivable ingredient thrown somewhere in the general direction of the oven – the Dublin quartet’s highly anticipated debut isn’t easily forgotten. Or even straightforward to categorise; the adjectives it attracts (abrasive, counter-intuitive, paranoid) are insufficient when detailing the ferocious, freeform mess of antagonistic brutalism smeared all over the place
Girl Band recently released a dizzying batch of tracks called The Early Years, and while some listeners are still revelling in the EP's disorienting effects, others have been fiending for another hit. The noise-rock outfit's new LP, Holding Hands with Jamie, continues the band's tradition of making each release more exquisitely grotesque than the last. The resulting recordings are the rawest Girl Band tracks yet recorded. The album opens with the oscillating frequencies of "Umbongo," an ominous build-up to Girl Band's imminent sonic assault. The mechanical "Baloo" stutters and screeches into "The Last Riddler," a merry and menacing post-punk chantey.
Very noisy Dublin fourpiece Girl Band have finally announced a debut album called Holding Hands with Jamie. The announcement arrives after the not-a-girl-band signed to Rough Trade back in December. There's a little teaser for you to sink your teeth into below, an audio-visual snippet showing a montage of their time at Bow Lane Studios, Dublin, and a slice of their slightly terrifying, heart-pounding, urgent-abrasive brand of music; beneath that you'll find the tracklist for the new album, out 25th September.
