The answer is The Man With The Movie Camera and The Cinematic Orchestra. J Swinscoe’s TCO have been described as classy and cerebral, but atmospheric and soulful too (NME). But the work also had a formative influence on the album that was to become ‘Every Day’. Certain tracks that made it on to the album were written specifically for the score, but more than that it made Swinscoe and the band think in terms of combining sounds and textures and unfolding narratives over a period of time using those sounds. In particular, the title 'Every Day' was based on the narrative in the film, which portrays a day in the life of an idealised Soviet society, starting fom people waking up in the morning, moving through various work place ideas, then into leisure time.

Performed live by the orchestra, Man With a Movie Camera doesn't allow J Swinscoe to indulge in his usual post-production magic, but it is a surprisingly adept score, with occasional bursts of on-the-one jazz-funk wailing to break it up. (Pity the poor comrade who's soundtracked 70 years later with a hyper-speed Pretty Purdie-type drum solo and some old-school-rap samples in the background. Scattered moments of brilliance abound, and at one point, someone on sax comes up with a brilliant foghorn recreation.

Jason Swinscoe, leader of the UK post-fusion, part-time IDM outfit Cinematic Orchestra, certainly knows how to enhance a mood (witness his moonlighting as a DJ and remixer), but on this set of vignettes- all recorded in 1999- he usually settles for pleasant nothings. Unlike last year's surprisingly lively Every Day, wherein Swinscoe passed up noir-jazz tastefulness for edgy expressionist, post-Ayler extroversions, Man With a Movie Camera catches his project in a much more conservative mode. It's clear that their adventures in support of the big screen have gotten more engaging over the years, though melodically and texturally, Man With a Movie Camera is pretty consistent with the rest of the band's catalog. Still, I would recommend anyone start with Every Day and work backwards as far as hitting their best stuff first. This isn't a bad album, but should almost certainly work better with something else happening.
