Kabouter is the Dutch word for gnome or leprechaun. In folklore, the Dutch Kabouters are akin to the Irish Leprechaun, Scandinavian Tomte or Nisse, the English Hob, the Scottish Brownie and the German Klabauter or kobold. In the folklore of the Low Countries, kabouters are tiny people who live underground, in a hill for instance. In modern children's stories they live in mushrooms. They are also spirits who help in the home. The males have long, full beards and wear tall, pointed red hats

The Huis met de Kabouters (Dutch for "House with the Gnomes") is a 19th-century building in Amsterdam, so named because the facade is decorated with two figures of gnomes. The building has held rijksmonument status since 1984. The house is at Ceintuurbaan 251-255 in the De Pijp district, near the Nieuwe Amstelbrug bridge across the river Amstel.

Gnomes (not to be confused with Dwarves) were small nocturnal creatures originally found in Scandinavia, known for wearing pointy hats. During the migration period, they moved out to populate the rest of Europe. All over the Netherlands (even on Dutch islands) people knew about them. The Dutch named these little men Kabouters, which was derived from the word Kobold (the Germanic word Kuwa-Walda meant "house governer" or "house spirit").

It was founded by Roel van Duijn and one of its objectives was to set up an alternative society based on Van Duyn’s ideas as stated in his book, De boodschap van een wijze Kabouter (The Message of a WiseKabouter ). Van Duyn for some time worked at an organic farm and asked the farmer if they were going to get a harvester. No, the farmer responded Noisy machines chase away the kabouters, and we need them to keep our plants healthy. That is why Van Duyn used this image.
