Suite Of Pieces From Electric Ladyland). 1. Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland). Turtle Island Quartet. The Music Of Jimi Hendrix & The Music Of David Balakrishnan ‎(CD, Album, Promo).

The Turtle Island Quartet honors saxophone titan John Coltrane with A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane, putting its distinct signature on tunes written by, inspired by, or associated with Trane in ways that are faithful to the original concepts while giving them new dimensions and depth. Jimmy Garrison's signature four-note bass figure serves as a leitmotif throughout the Quartet's fine interpretation of A Love Supreme (Impulse!, 1964). The Music of Jimi Hendrix and David Balakrishnan by Ernest Barteldes.

Turtle Island String Quartet Stanford Lively Arts Series Stanford University, Palo Alto, California February 16, 2008. One of the drags about string quartets is it's taboo to applaud solos. Not that the urge is common, but imagine a Village Vanguard crowd sitting on their hands most of the evening and punctuating the final ovation with a single cry of "bravo" from the back of the room. The featured premier was "Anika's Dream," written for arts patron David Kaun by David Balakrishnan, a founding member of the quartet. The piece was modern and intense, highlighted by his dominance of the second movement with an unaccompanied opening bass/melody solo, followed by a bowing interlude. For over 35 years, we have been dealing in avant, experimental, off-beat, progressive and rehearsal intensive rock, jazz, and contemporary music as well as many other undefinable musics from across the globe. Our label, Cuneiform Records, was founded in 1984. explores and celebrates the legacy of guitar rock icon Jimi Hendrix in grand TIQ style. In many ways, Turtle Island Quartet - led by founding violinist David Balakrishnan, a Hendrix fan since his teenage years - has taken Hendrix's cue in the course of their 25-year career by reexamining and reconstructing conventional genres of music and seeking new permutations of style, technique and composition.

The project is the brainchild of David Balakrishnan, Turtle Island’s founding member. I actually got to see Hendrix play live in LA when I was 15, says Balakrishnan. He had a huge impact on me. Balakrishnan formed Turtle Island in 1985 as a vehicle for the music he was composing while in graduate school at Antioch University West. The current lineup consists of Balakrishnan and Mads Tolling on violin, Jeremy Kittel on viola, and Mark Summer on cello. also features a four-part suite composed by Balakrishnan, which will be part of Friday’s program. Balakrishnan notes that creating original music is a central component to Turtle Island’s DNA, as much as bringing in nontraditional influence.

Turtle Island Quartet must be the only string ensemble formed because a 14-year-old fell in love with the music of Jimi Hendrix. David Balakrishnan, who plays first violin for Turtle three decades after co-founding the group, had those influences and others swirling in his head as a California high schooler. That explains why nobody has been able to classify a group that plays jazz (and sometimes whatever it feels like) on instruments associated with Mozart. What it feels like now is Jelly, Rags and Monk, which opens the Charlotte Concerts season Friday at Halton Theatre.
