Cliff Butler And His Blue Boys.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is a 1981 collection of short stories by American writer Raymond Carver, as well as the title of one of the stories in the collection.

For many years, Yeats was in love with a beautiful actress by the name of Maude Gonne. Gonne would not (or could not) return his love. This was a bitter rejection for Yeats, whose heart was set on her. This poem is address to Gonne, and Yeats specifically refers to himself as Love. His words resonate with the masses because all people young or old can relate. Those enjoying their youth can stop and picture themselves when they have aged. The elderly can reminisce on the days of their youth. The poem reveals the reality of passing time, the brevity of life, and the importance of love. When You Are Old Analysis.

When You Are Old" is a short lyric of twelve lines in three stanzas. The poem is the product of the early period in Yeats's poetic career. It is addressed to Maud Gonne with whom he was in love. With the realization she would mutter to herself with anguish that he was no more alive. The poem presents a portrait of decaying and dying youth and beauty. The poet has referred to it time and again quite passionately all through his poetic career. Maud Gonne, his beloved, was a proud and headstrong girl

WHEN you are old and grey and full of sleepAnd nodding by the fire take down this bookAnd slowly read and dream of the soft look. William Butler Yeats. Poems by William Butler Yeats : 391, 399. prev.

Composed in 1892, When You Are Old is a very loose adaptation of a Petrarchan sonnet by Ronsard ( Quand vous serez bien vieille ). Yeats turns the poem from a sonnet into a douzain (12-line poem) and alters its themes subtly, expressing wistful frustration at his unrequited love for his frequent muse, Maud Gonne. The original sonnet from Pierre Ronsard, dedicated to Hélène de Surgères: Quand vous serez bien vieille, au soir à la chandelle, Assise aupres du feu, devidant et filant, Direz, chantant mes vers, en vous esmerveillant, Ronsard me celebroit du temps que j'estois belle.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look. Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled. And paced upon the mountains overhead. n/a. Source: The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats (1989).

Individual the stories are a light read but they all theme around the topic of life and love which are designed to raise subliminal questions in the reader’s mind. The last chapter is the longest with 15 pages and begins with four characters sit around a table, Mel, Terri, Nick, and Laura. They are all drinking and discussing love in the kitchen. A man can go along obeying all the rules and then it don’t matter a damn anymore. Raymond Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The light was draining out of the room, going back through the window where it had come from.
