Blue & Lonesome is a covers album by the Rolling Stones-their 23rd British and 25th American studio album-released on 2 December 2016. It is the band's first album to feature only cover songs, and their first studio release since 2005's A Bigger Bang, with its eleven-year gap being the longest between two albums from the band

The Rolling Stones' Blue and Lonesome: the classic songs they're covering. A less cynical observer’s first thought might be to wonder why they didn’t do something like this sooner: the opening cover of Buddy Johnson’s I’m Just Your Fool comes barreling out of the speakers, sounding more raw and vibrant than the Stones have done in years.

It’s official: The Rolling Stones will put out their first studio record in over a decade on December 2nd with the release of new album Blue & Lonesome. The 12 tracks, recorded in three days at London’s British Grove Studios, all cover songs by classic bluesmen, including Howlin’ Wolf ( Commit a Crime ), Little Walter ( I Gotta Go ) and Jimmy Reed ( Little Rain ). Eric Clapton guests on the group’s cover of Little Johnny Taylor’s Everybody Knows About My Good Thing and Otis Rush’s I Can’t Quit You Baby. The album doubles as a nod to the band’s formative years, when the band would play.

To ease into the new place, the Stones decided to knock out a version of Little Walter's "Blue and Lonesome" and it sounded good enough that the band decided to cut a few more covers, winding up with a full album of Chicago blues in a few days. The Stones haven't worked at such swift speed in decades - not since the early '60s, when they were churning out two albums a year - and much of the appeal of Blue & Lonesome lies in its casualness: by being tossed off, the album highlights how the Stones play together as a band, blending instinct and skill.

The Rolling Stones were never really a thinking band. A shrewd one, for sure, and one of the very best. But they earned their title as one of rock's all-time greatest by following their guts and playing what came naturally, not by overthinking the process. That self-conscious analyzation made so many of their records from the mid-'70s onward sound so labored, as they hammered out detail after detail. The latest, Blue & Lonesome, was recorded in just three days, with little planning or overthinking. Granted, it's a covers album filled with the type of blues songs the band cut its teeth on more than 50 years ago, but that doesn't take away from its spitfire appeal. The Stones haven't made an album this virile in decades. It certainly helps that the core quartet (along with some help from friends like Eric Clapton and Chuck Leavell) sounds like its off the clock.

Blue & Lonesome is the 12th album by The Rolling Stones to reach number one. The Official Charts Company said 95,000 of the album's sales were physical - the rest were downloads and streams. It was also the only new entry in this week's top 40. The last Rolling Stones album to reach number one was a 2010 reissue of Exile On Main St, but 1994's Voodoo Lounge was the band's last album of original studio material to top the chart. The news came a day after Sir Mick Jagger became a father for the eighth time at the age of 73. Top five albums.

The Rolling Stones first studio album since 2005, Blue & Lonesome features covers of old blues songs, originally by artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter, and features guest guitar work by Eric Clapton. Blue & Lonesome Q&A. Featuring Eric Clapton. Producers Don Was, Keith Richards & Mick Jagger. Writers Buddy Johnson, Eddie Taylor, Ewart Abner & 9 more.
