Album · 2013 · 8 Songs.

Los Angeles duo Soft Metals approach their music with the loose conceptual framework of avant-garde sound artists. Their second album, which dives deeper into the hallucinogenic soundscapes of their previous work, comes off like a proggy synth-pop record that wants to get treated like a sculpture. did to worse effect on Lenses. On the occasions Soft Metals inch nearer to pop songcraft, like they do with the bass-heavy R&B light show of On a Cloud or the arty melodrama of No Turning Back, the results are surprisingly effective, especially considering the ways in which the duo’s penchant for breakneck cyclical synth patterns augment their prettiest harmonies with a paranoid sense of unease.

Soft Metals make most sense when they check their pop inclinations at the door, and by the end of the album you can’t help but think they realize it. And while the songs with vocals aren’t slouches, they do drift into too much of the same thing, with ‘No Turning Back’ jumping off with an intriguing, Blue Velvet -esque tone but loses its intrigue when the song over-embellishes the its implied directions. And space on Lenses is a precious commodity, with only eight songs offered, and only two of them drifting on for more than five minutes. The way that Soft Metals experiment with repetition without needing much time to do so is unusual and impressive, with Lenses ending up so much stronger for allowing the ideas behind the music to drift into view of the audience.

The glamorous vibe Soft Metals exude on Lenses may or may not be due to Patricia Hall and Ian Hicks' move from Portland to . but it's undeniable that their mix of dance and synth pop sounds more sophisticated here than it did on their self-titled debut. They tone down the playful experiments and cheap and cheerful keyboard sounds that gave Soft Metals an indie pop patina, opting for a sleek, slick palette that comes to the fore on instrumentals like "Interobserver," which closes the album in a cloud of synth arpeggios.
