A skeptic might cast aspersions on the tale behind Jürgen Müller 's Science of the Sea. The story begins at the University of Kiel in Germany, where the self-taught composer was studying oceanic science in the late 1970s. Müller purchased some electronic instruments and set them up on his houseboat in the town of Heikendorf, where he began crafting instrumental pieces that reflected his love of undersea life. His dream of selling those compositions to film and TV companies for use in documentaries never transpired. That's where this album disconnects from anything that could perfunctorily be tagged as "new ag. This isn't simple relaxation music, although much of it could easily perform that function. Instead the beautifully uncomplicated surface structures are used to prize open a boundless amount of feelings that are every bit as complex and unfathomable as the ocean itself.

Science of the Sea. (LP - Digitalis
In terms of apocryphal stories about a long lost album, Jürgen Müller’s Science of the Sea is a whopper. If your imagination runs deep, Müller was an Oceanic scientist studying at a German University in 1979 (coincidentally the moment when krautrock went kosmische). With no musical training, Müller decided to soundtrack his studies
It is very soothing and relaxing and closer to New Age music than anything else. Jurgen Muller appears to be the only musician on the record. The CD claims it was recorded in 1982, but this is disputed. The official story is that Muller was a young marine biologist at the University of Kiel in Germany who recorded this record on his houseboat. Norman Chambers, a Seattle-based composer, claims to be the real Jürgen Muller. It probably does not matter who wrote the music.
