István Mátyás was born in Zalaegerszeg in 1980, where he learned to play piano and organ. He was schooled in music in Szombathely, before completing his piano and organ studies in Vienna. In 2000, he placed third in the international piano competition held by Steinway & Sons in Vienna, later winning the 4th Mikael Tariverdiev International Organ Competition held in Kaliningrad. In addition to performing throughout Europe, he recorded the organ works of Hans Gál in 2007 and has worked as répétiteur at the Graz Academy of Music since 2008
