Another awesome album from The Hold Steady.
Magnet and The Onion’s AV Club named it the best album of 2006. Pitchfork Media rated Boys and Girls in America . out of 10, and named it the fifth-best album of the year. They later ranked it as the 64th best album of the decade. Yahoo! Music ranked the album on their list of the top 25 albums of 2006. Boys and Girls in America Q&A.
Stay Positive is the fourth studio album by The Hold Steady, released on July 15, 2008 through Vagrant Records. Vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn notes that the album is about "the idea of ageing gracefully keeping going, perseverance how to stay true to the ideals and ideas you had when you were younger.
When this first came out I bought all three color variants (because I loved the album; I don't do this with EVERY record). ) I've never seen a way to discern which is which when it comes to blue/pink. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if it's better to sell it sealed with no idea which color it is or if it's better to unseal (as little as possible) to know the color for sure.
The Hold Steady is an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2003. The band consists of Craig Finn (vocals, guitar), Tad Kubler (guitar), Galen Polivka (bass), Bobby Drake (drums), Franz Nicolay (keyboards) and Steve Selvidge (guitar). Noted for their "lyrically dense storytelling," and classic rock influences, the band's narrative-based songs frequently address themes, such as drug addiction, religion and redemption, and. often feature recurring characters based within the city of Minneapolis. They came to prominence with the release of their third studio album, Boys and Girls in America, in 2006. In 2010, keyboardist and t Franz Nicolay left the band prior to the recording of their fifth studio album, Heaven Is Whenever (2010).
Those looking for Separation Sunday "part two" may be disappointed by the huge sound Boys and Girls in America has (the band's moved to Vagrant); it's not much of a concept record, and it's not as Catholic, but all those struggles are in here just beneath the surface (and sometimes on top of it). One of the ballads here, "First Night," begins with a piano and an acoustic guitar lilting a rather loose melody that gives Craig Finn the support he needs to get out of his pent-up, novelistic, wordsmithing mouth. It exposes in the first and third person what it means to grow up right now in the midst of suburban waste. It's angsty, but Finn's got a sense of humor, and the band can play their asses off.
The Hold Steady, from Brooklyn, make their intentions clear from the opening line of their third album: "There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right," slurs Craig Finn. Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together. Over the course of 11 songs, Finn details those sad times, caused by too many drugs ("It started recreational, it ended kinda medical"), too much alcohol, or usually both: these are hangover songs, rather than party songs
On opener Stuck Between Stations, the highest-soaring lowlife anthem in the Hold Steady’s songbook, he spits, She was a really cool kisser and she wasn’t all that strict of a Christian/ She was a damn good dancer but she wasn’t all that great of a girlfriend. Finn threw in more singing alongside his nasal raving this time around, one of the ways Boys And Girls In America smoothed over some of Separation Sunday’s more feral qualities.
The Hold Steadys trajectory is a perfect complement to the excellence theyve demonstrated over their three albums. After the dismantling of math punkers Lifter Puller, ical virtuoso Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler moved from Minneapolis to Brooklyn, trimmed the fat, went back to their roots and began what has become a full-on bar rock sensation. Their um tear culminates with their finest to date, the almighty Boys and Girls in America
