Tropical stout is a style born, and still largely nurtured, in the West Indies - most notably the Caribbean - and Africa. It is another recent addition to the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) guidelines. Before the 2015 revisions, it was considered a subcategory of the Foreign Extra Stout (FES) style. This change, bringing Tropical out from FES’s shadow and recognizing it as its own style, will hopefully help it become more familiar across the craft beer world. Its history starts with a beer that was heavily exported from Britain to the English colonies in the Indies. Taste: Smooth roasted and dark grain flavors range from medium to high and intermingle with noticeable sweetness. The roasted malt character can present in the medium to high range, though balanced by the sweetness, and often carries undertones of silky chocolate or coffee.

System of a Stout" is an imperial stout infused with all the traditional ingredients of a savory cup of Armenian coffee: cardamom, molasses, coffee (of course), and brandy. Taste brings freshly brewed cold pressed coffee, black licorice, toffee, soy sauce, tree sap, molasses and brown sugar. Mid palate brings delectably sweet barrel wood, vanilla, oak, tree bark, toasted bread, alcohol sugars, sweet chocolate candies and toffee. Finishes smooth with residual notes of coffee, alcohol sugars, vanilla and creme brulee. Overall, a seriously fantastic beer. Very roasted malt forward accompanied by intensely sweet an. Quick Rate.
Palate – Taste which is influenced by the grains, hops, water, yeast and adjuncts used in production. Sour/Acidic – Perceived on the sides of the tongue towards the rear of the mouth, a negative taste similar to that of vinegar or lemon, often caused by a bacterial infection. Sweet – A sugary taste due to the presence of reducing sugars, experienced on the front of the tongue. High levels are desirable in most strong ales and lagers, and low levels in American light lagers and lambics. Citrus, light spice, a touch of apple and a dry finish make this beer another great choice for hot weather. Try Hoegaarden Original White or Ommegang Wit for a taste of what this style should be like. It’s also great for brunch as it pairs nicely with eggs, ham, swiss and salmon.
The taste of stout and malted barley in general is unique, so all the descriptions you get are going to be a very rough approximation. It's a bit like trying to describe the taste of cranberry juice to somebody whose never tasted one. As some other answers have pointed out there is a vast array of stouts ( and Porters, which depending who you listen to are either the same or related). I'll try and describe Irish-style dry stouts (which you are most likely to encounter - Guinness, Murphy's, Beamish) and Oatmeal stouts (which I like the best). Bonafide beer expert Michael Jackson.
