Headtrip to Nowhere is the major label debut album by the Canadian heavy metal band Flybanger. It was released on February 20, 2001, through Columbia Records. The CD is enhanced to include a video of the song "Outlived", not otherwise heard on the disc. The album included two tracks which had been released with the band's Outlived EP. This album was Flybanger's only major release before disbanding.
Canada's Flybanger has many of the standard elements of garden-variety heavy metal. Singer Garth alternates between a gruff baritone and a standard-issue enraged howl, singing lyrics full of extreme pessimism and condemnation. Though the expletives come frequently, the album has not been given a parental warning sticker. Guitarist Bryan Fratesi, meanwhile, plays a series of simple power chords. But what sets Flybanger apart from other heavy metal bands is its rhythm section, particularly drummer Rob Wade.
An album title like Headtrip To Nowhere is actually quite catchy, however. So you might get the impression this could be pretty catchy and rock well. In the end, Flybanger falls right in between. There isn't a whole lot of catchy or rocking songs that are needed, but something in them feels like they're trying a little harder than most bands. They don't completely break out, but they try too. Make no mistake, this is still pretty ordinary stuff. Between the small downfall and the pool of nediocrity, Flybanger were able to pull off some worthwhile songs. Oddly, they're in the second half of the album. Albums in this genre tend to hit you hard in the first few songs and make you delete the rest. Here, after the dull "Demon Away" finishes, the album only gets better. Crackballs" is a little stupid, but its hook is made for the arena. Weapon"' is more fast-paced and comes off as the catchiest track. The album was preceded by a 5-track Outlived EP which was released through Gotham Records. According to the vocalist Garth Allen, the band was given "100% complete creative control" by Columbia. The album was produced by Matt Wallace, known for his work with Faith No More and Deftones among other successful bands. Indeed, two songs feature a guest appearance by the former Faith No More guitarist Jim Martin. The third and final single to be released from the album, "Blind World", was used on the Dracula 2000 film soundtrack. Various subject matters are examined in Headtrip to Nowhere.
