The Original Jill Scott from the Vault, Vol. 1 is a compilation album by American recording artist Jill Scott, released August 30, 2011 on Hidden Beach Recordings. It follows the release of her fourth studio album The Light of the Sun (2011), and contains previous unreleased tracks recorded by Scott when she was signed to Hidden Beach. The album was released as a result of the record label's lawsuit against Scott, who left in 2010.

The first fruit of Hidden Beach's settlement, following their lawsuit occasioned by Jill Scott's move to Warner Bros, is far better than most contractual fulfilment albums – possibly due to Scott's involvement in its compilation. Indeed, it's rather better than her current "official" album The Light of the Sun, with only the lacklustre "Wondering Why?" sounding like a rumination to which instrumental parts had accidentally adhered.

I don't know how many times I looked at this album but couldn't pull the trigger or more accurately, press the mouse button because in my psyche to purchase it felt like a violation of a - unilateral and unknown to her - covenant with the irrepressible Ms. Scott, a betrayal. Yet, not having it in my collection left a vacuum that I had to confront whenever I decided to open my Jill vault and that occurs with a frequency not duplicated with nearly any other artist. I'm glad I finally relented. This is the Jill who brought butterflies the first time I heard her and continues to do so with that silky, sensuous voice.
