Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure", which are two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories – most notably "Pick the Winner". The show premiered on Broadway in 1950, where it ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical

Frank Loesser's Guys and Dolls, in 1950, was a masterly achievement in the new tradition - music, story, characters, acting, and direction pouring out of the same crucible. Musical dramas with nobler themes have been less perfectly composed than this breezy legend of an underworld derived from some of Damon Runyan's stories. Less original writers than Runyan, Burrows, Swerling and Loesser could have romanticized (the gamblers of Guys and Dolls) into Bohemians.

Nathan Lane was a great Nathan Detroit. This album shines though with Emily Loesser's fantastic performance as Sarah. She sings the role as if she was born to do so - it easy for her. Every song she sings is a highlight, and I often end up getting just a bit excited if I know one of her songs is queued up. All in all this particular album is good. Ms. Loesser is the highlight, and undoubtedly the accuracy of the music will prove useful to those producing the show in theatres (the 1992 Cast Recording is good, but don't get used to it, directors!). It is certainly worth owning.

When Frank Loesser's musical "Guys and Dolls" opened at the 46th Street Theatre 50 years ago this weekend, it was Broadway's first and best musical about Broadway-not the neon thicket of bright lights and blooming marquees, but Broadway's more garish undergrowth, Damon Runyon's world of gamblers, touts and showgirls itching and straining to roll sevens. and 11s in the great crapshoot they call life
