Prince is the second studio album by American recording artist Prince. Records Prince recorded the album in just a few weeks after Warner Bros. asked for a follow-up to his 1978 debut, For You. Prince had used twice his initial recording advance on the album, and it had failed to generate a pop hit (although "Soft and Wet" became a No. 12 R&B hit).

Prince had the Cloud Guitar remade many times throughout his career in different colors and finishes, and the instrument re-emerged at several key points in his artistic evolution. Prince would call on the company Schecter to repair his Clouds and manufacture new replicas for his use, including a run that was sold to fans on Prince’s HitnRun Tour. A 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital role Prince played in other artists’ careers, Originals includes Prince's foundational recordings of hit songs like "Manic Monday," "The Glamorous Life," "Jungle Love," and more. Prince led the way, for artistic freedom, for ownership.

Prince’s first album For You was released by Warner in 1978 and got stuck at on Billboard’s Pop Chart. Later Prince said that For You didn’t reflect him as a person. It was too mechanical and recorded after too many sessions on very little sleep. He said of the album, I didn’t really feel like recording for eighty per cent of the record. This religious, jazzy album (Prince had recently converted to become a Jehovah’s Witness) was a big gig for Bayoc. The name Cbabi Bayoc is an acronym for Creative Black Artist Battling Ignorance and Blessed African Youth of Creativity. Just a few years before, you could find Bayoc at Six Flags Over St. Louis working as a caricature artist.
