Nikolai Lugansky is the young Russian pianist who won the silver medal at the 1994 Tchaikovsky competition, who later won the Diapson d'Or in 2000 and 2001, and who has already won the German Music Critic's Award for 2003 for this recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1 and No. 3. Like Richter and Gilels before him, Lugansky is the. latest in a long line of Russian pianists who've been hailed in the West as the Next Great Russian Pianist.

Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto, which he composed in 1909 for a concert tour of the US, belongs up there with the greatest examples of the genre. The 20th century produced no greater concerto for any instrument, and the mixture of breathtaking display and brooding expressive intensity with which Rachmaninov invested the solo part, coupled with the sombre colours of the orchestration, give the work a place alongside the best of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. It is, without question, the composer's masterpiece . He just glides through the opening movement, for instance, never engaging with its disturbing power.
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1 In F Sharp Minor, Op. 1 - III. Allegro Vivace. 4. Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 In D Minor, Op. 30 - I. Allegro Ma Non Tanto. 5. 30 - II. Intermezzo: Adagio. 6. 30 - III. Final: Alla Breve. Rachmaninov - Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini, Etc (CD3) (2004).
The grand finale of Sudbin’s Rachmaninov cycle combines the two best-loved concertos – No. 2 in C minor and No. 3 in D minor – but it also constitutes a home-coming of a kind, as it was recorded in London, Yevgeny Sudbin’s base since 1997. For his partners in these monumental and almost iconic concertos, Sudbin has chosen the BBC Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Sakari Oramo.
This set still remains arguably the best set of Rachmaninov Concertos ever recorded. The chemistry between Ashkenazy and Previn is electrifying, and the orchestral playing by the LSO, at the peak of their powers, completes the package. The Kingsway Hall recording has a tendency to slight over brightness at times, but this doesn't spoil the enjoyment from start to finish.
