So, Let Me Come Over was my first and favourite Buffalo Tom album. For me it marks the place where they are perfectly balanced between their Husker saur Jr punk roots and their love of more classic rock bands and song structures. in 1992 and an excellent bonus track, Crutch . Larry is one of my favourite songs on the album. A great Janovitz chord progression, married to a simple but brilliant bass line from Colbourn and frantic drumming from Maginnis. The time signature seems odd but that just might be because Janowitz's delays his vocal's entrance in each verse.
In 1992, Buffalo Tom released Let Me Come Over, a gritty set of driving rock and achingly melancholy ballads; several of its tracks became alternative radio staples, including the gorgeous ballad "Taillights Fade. Despite an increased amount of critical praise and some radio airplay, the album didn't sell.
Buffalo Tom (Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn and Tom Maginnis) formed at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1984 – a breeding ground of post punk guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies. They thrived on college radio in the late 1980’s and toured extensively in Europe, the US, Australia and Japan. In 1992 the band recorded their third album Let Me Come Over withh a varied group of songs they had been developing at home and on the road – mixing their live power trio sound with some more acoustic based guitar ballads
Let Me Come Over is one of those albums that has had no great impact on rock history, indeed in the great polluted ocean of rock this album would barely merit a scuzzy ripple. This was Buffalo Toms third album and took their formula of emotionally resonant themes and scouring riffs to a new plaintative level. Make no mistake there is a genuinely articulate core at the heart of this music.
