Désiré Louis Corneille Dondeyne (21 July 1921 – 12 February 2015) was a French conductor, composer and teacher who was born in Laon in the Aisne département. He studied music at the conservatory in Lille and beginning in 1936 at the Conservatoire de Paris. Dondeyne earned first prize in clarinet, chamber music, harmony, fugue, counterpoint and composition. From 1939 to 1953 he was the solo clarinet with the Musique de l’air (the French Air Force Band). From 1954-79, he was conductor of La Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (the Paris metropolitan police band)

The Berlioz was written in 1840 to commemorate the Revolution of 1830 (when Charles X was overthrown in favor of Louis-Philippe). All the music on this album is scored for wind band (woodwinds, brass, and percussion), but only the Berlioz gives the brass anything substantial. The other works are really woodwind showcases with brass backup. John Wallace, former principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra, founded The Wallace Collection, originally brass-only, but gradually expanded to accomodate a wider spectrum of wind band music. Francois-Joseph Gossec conducted and composed for the band of the Garde Nationale of the French Revolution. As the liner notes say, the Symphonie Militaire is in the style of the Classical woodwind serenades. Ironically, then, this short (only 5 minutes) two-movement work sounds more appropriate for the royal court rather than for the ill-bred, unwashed masses of the Revolution.
