This was one of the first Canadian Brass albums I had the pleasure of listening to, and I have been hooked ever since. This album features music written for brass and arrangements of famous Baroque compositions. The title of the album highlights four ideals of the Baroque era, and the performance by this incarnation of the group lives up to it. Composers featured are Samuel Scheidt, Jean Joseph Mouret, J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell, William Boyce, Gottfried Reiche, and Jeremiah Clarke. Featured are some of the most famous pieces ever written for brass including "Rondeau," which was used as the theme for "Masterpiece Theatre." Bach's 'Air on the G String' is another melody that has become widely familiar. "Trumpet Tune" and "Prince of Denmark's March (Trumpet Voluntary)" are two pieces that you may be familiar with if you have ever been to a wedding, as they are both used frequently as processionals and recessionals. The playing is immaculate from every member and reflects the Baroque style very well. The extremely difficult piccolo trumpet parts are played flawlessly and the challenging Bach fugue is played with mastery by all. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys Baroque, Classical, or Brass music played by great musicians!
