In the 1910s, he was one of the first musicians in the northeastern United States to embrace the new "jass" style brought to that part of the country by musicians from New Orleans, Louisiana. With pianist Frank Signorelli he formed the group "The Original Memphis Five" in 1917. NOTE: Phil NAPOLEON (né Filippo Napoli 1901 in Boston, Massachusetts – d. 1990 in Miami, Florida). Through the 1910s, he became one of the first jass trumpet players in northeastern United States and in 1917 with pianist Frank Signorelli he formed the group "The Original Memphis Five". the jass music beyond the style of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and towards the more sophisticated White Jazz of Bix Beiderbecke and Red Nichols. In 1956 Phil opened his own club called Napoleon's Retreat in Miami, Florida where he lived until his death, although continued to perform Dixieland jazz in the club up until the 1980s.
