Brahms was very conscious of this – indeed, it was one of the main reasons why he took so long to compose a symphony – and in the case of this violin concerto, there is an obvious parallel to be made between the two composers’ works. Both wrote only one concerto for this most popular of instruments. Neither had any personal experience of playing the violin and therefore had to rely heavily on others to interpret the music and to guide its progress.

Sarabande is the second solo album by Jon Lord recorded in September 1975 near Düsseldorf (Germany). The orchestra was conducted by Eberhard Schoener. The complete Sarabande suite was premiered in live performance in Budapest on 18 September 2010 and later in Sofia on (30 October) and Essen (15 November).

Brahms only orchestrated No., 3 and 10. The other 18 were orchestrated by various others under commission from the publisher, Simrock. Composed for piano 4 hands, between 1858 and 1868 (No. to 10), 1879 (No. 1 to 21). No. to 10 were arranged for solo piano by Brahms, 1872., 3 and 10 were arranged for orchestra by Brahms, 1873 (first performance in this version: Lepizig, 5 February 1874; first published in 1874).
