Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines), BWV 1, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in 1725 in Leipzig for the feast of the Annunciation and led the first performance on 25 March 1725, which that year fell on Palm Sunday. It is a chorale cantata, based on Philipp Nicolai's hymn "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" (1599).
Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). Formats & Prices. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): 1Magnificat anima mea (Chorus)03:00. Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243 (Original 1723 Version): 2Et exultavit (Soprano 2)02:07. Bach reworked his Magnificat in E flat major, BWV 243a, originally composed in 1723, transposing it down to D major and slightly modifying the instrumentation. In this revised version he omitted the four interpolations or Christmas laudes. Arion also performs Kuhnau’s cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How lovely shines the morning star) to complete this joyful album devoted to Christmas.
Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern: O Wundersohn, dein überirdisch Wesen. On this recording directed by Alexander Weimann, Arion performs the version in D major (BWV 243), and reintroduces the four all-too-rarely heard laudes.

Teldec's mammoth Bach 2000 box set represents a kind of culmination of that original attempt to come to terms with Johann Sebastian Bach's unparalleled legacy. This set brings together performances recorded over the last several decades-a small percentage of the recordings are previously unreleased-of all the extant works determined by modern scholarship to be authentic. There are also some pieces the authorship of which is still in question and a few now deemed "inauthentic" but familiarly associated with the composer. Disc: 1. 1. Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern. 2. Du Wahrer Gottes und Marien Sohn. 3. Erfuellet, ihr himmlischen goettlichen Flammen.
