Sly and The Family Stone's galvanizing appearance at the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair in August of 1969 may well represent the pinnacle of their career, but their rise to this apogee of recognition was the culmination of a long slow climb to fame dating back even further than Sylvester Stewart's, nee Sly, tenure as a disc jockey and record producer. during the early to mid-Sixties in San Francisco. This composite of sets from the Family Stone’s October 4th and 5th shows at the Fillmore East is the long-needed document of the band at their full power, when their chart-fed stardom wasn’t yet guaranteed and their drive was still fueled by hunger.

A four disc set, documenting Sly and the Family Stone's four-concert stand at New York City's Fillmore East in 1968, is due out on July 17 via Epic/Legacy. The release is called "Live at the Fillmore East October 4th & 5th, 1968" and it portrays the four Fillmore of the legendary group, recorded towards the end of a busy year, during which they released both "Dance to the Music" and "Life"
