The quartet called itself NOVALIS after the most important German poet of early romanticism. They created a rock music of poetic, lyrical with german lyrics and instrumental beauty. This 1975 self-titled album was their 2nd album and continues to show their own style take on these influences. Novalis" (1975) and the classic "Sommerabend" (1976), both are actually much better than the comparatively disappointing fourth album, "Brandung" (1977).

Novalis is one of the exceptions, and on their second album they maintain an even tighter fusion of folk-rock and classical elements, topped off with lush, prolific vocals that soften the music even more. With their debut album entitled Banished Bridge in 1973, the lyrics were entirely English, but Novalis has the band switching to their native tongue, which, in turn, sounds more free-flowing and poetic.

Novalis (/nəˈvælɪs/; German: ) was the pseudonym and pen name of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg (2 May 1772 – 25 March 1801), a poet, author, mystic, and philosopher of Early German Romanticism. Hardenberg's professional work and university background, namely his study of mineralogy and management of salt mines in Saxony, was often ignored by his contemporary readers. The first studies showing important relations between his literary and professional works started in the 1960s.
