It was founded by conductor Anton Kersjes, a well-known figure of the day who had his own weekly television programme. He succeeded in bringing a new public to the concert hall, introducing them to the ‘golden masterworks’ of the orchestral repertoire. Kersjes was not only a very able conductor but could enthral an audience with engaging stories about classical music and composers. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (RPhO; Dutch: Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest) is a Dutch symphony orchestra based in Rotterdam. Its primary venue is the concert hall De Doelen. The RPhO is considered one of the Netherlands' two principal orchestras of international standing, second to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. In addition to symphony concerts, the RPhO performs as the opera orchestra in productions at De Nederlandse Opera, as do other Dutch ensembles.
