The Calm Before is interesting in how it falls at the (as of now) tail end of Elliott’s discography; it feels like a prequel of sorts. It’s all very preemptive. The titular song The Calm Before" speaks of an incoming storm via Elliott’s smooth bass register, conveying a sense of poetic acceptance amidst the rich ambience. The instrumental passages grant The Calm Before breathing room, with acoustic guitars, pianos, woodwinds, strings, and deep drones complementing Elliott’s brooding with a sound loosely associated with Britannic gwerzioù (folk songs of lament) and perhaps older Tindersticks. On I Only Wanted to Give You Everything, they heighten the gradual realization of a failed romantic pursuit, while he sings uniformly in two octaves, insisting, "but you don’t love me, but you don’t love me," over and over.

Matt Elliott is an English guitarist and singer-songwriter, originally from Bristol, England and now based in France, who plays dark folk music. He also produced and recorded electronic music under the name The Third Eye Foundation. Elliott started recording with the band Linda's Strange Vacation, which included Kate Wright (Movietone) and Rachel Brook (Movietone/Flying Saucer Attack), around the time Wright and Brook formed Movietone, and Brook and Dave Pearce formed Flying Saucer Attack

With The Calm Before being the seventh album under the Matt Elliott name (Elliott's early releases bear the Third Eye Foundation moniker) it's surprising that only now does the British guitarist point the storm out. If one has paid any attention to the man's career up until this point, the presence of storms is all but certain. Whether the storms are physical - "The Kursk", the story of a doomed Russian submarine on 2005's Drinking Songs - or emotional - the entirety of 2011's chilling The Broken Man - Elliott always lets his audience know the turbulence. The Calm Before's predecessor, 2013's Only Myocardial Infarction Can Break Your Heart, gave hints that Elliott's songwriting was getting slightly less glum. The title itself is damn near optimistic compared to previous Elliott album titles like Drinking Songs and Failing Songs.
