The International Chopin Piano Competition (Polish: Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina), often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It is one of the few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin.

The Competition is strictly connected with the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The winners of the first prize of both younger and older age group will be allowed to take part in the Elimination Rounds of the International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in October 2020 in Warsaw (without the necessity to take part in the Preliminary Round). In the jury of the Beijing International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Young Pianists there will be Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń (chairwoman), Piotr Paleczny (Poland), Dina Yoffe (Israel), Dang Thai Son (Vietnam), Wu Ying (China),.

Fryderyk Chopin Society Prize for best performance of a polonaise: Seong-Jin Cho. Polish Radio Prize for best performance of mazurkas: Kate Liu. Krystian Zimerman Prize for best performance of a sonata: Charles Richard-Hamelin. Since the 1st Chopin Competition which took place during the winter of 1927, the Competition has highlighted the Polish composer’s works and rewarded its best interpreters. The Competition takes place every five years in Warsaw.

List of jurors of the International Chopin Piano Competition. This is a list of people who have taken part in the judging board of the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition since its foundation in 1927. The name of the chairmaster is written in bold. Zygmunt Butkiewicz (Poland). Zbigniew Drzewiecki (Poland). Alfred Hohn (Germany, took part only in the last round). Witold Maliszewski (Poland). Piotr Maszyński (Poland). Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński (Poland).

Cho’s Chopin is easygoing and free. Instead of a nuclear arms race of escalating tension, Cho is soft-spoken, noble, lighthearted, unencumbered. If there is one aspect that stands out on this disc of highlights from Cho’s winning performances at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition, it is Cho’s large-form narrative. It is something that comes out after repeated listening: the lightness that is first apparent turns into a kind of unhurriedness, which in multiple places then turns into a noticeable patient, big-canvas musical perspective.

The next year, he won first prize in the Fourth International Hamamatsu Piano Competition in Hamamatsu, Japan. The year after that he won the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition in Rabat, Morocco. Listening to these three discs of his four performances at the competition, one can readily understand why: the international jury recognized Blechacz as a natural-born Chopin player. He's not a note-perfect Chopin player - there are slips and slides here and there - but he is a nearly ideal Chopin player. Best of all, for an only 20-year-old pianist, Blechacz has the heart and soul to play Chopin. It is one of few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin. Traditional special awards include the Polish Radio prize for the best Mazurka performance (since 1927), the Fryderyk Chopin Society in Warsaw prize for the best Polonaise (since 1960), and the National Philharmonic prize for the best performance of a Piano Concerto (since 1980). The competition is organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Warsaw. com/International Chopin Piano Competition.
