Bernd Alois Zimmermann (20 March 1918 – 10 August 1970) was a German composer. He is perhaps best known for his opera Die Soldaten, which is regarded as one of the most important German operas of the 20th century, after those of Berg. As a result of his individual style, it is hard to label his music as avant-garde, serial or postmodern. His music employs a wide range of methods including the twelve-tone row and musical quotation.

Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Requiem für einen jungen Dichter, for 2 speakers, 2 solo voices, 3 choruses, orchestra, jazz combo, hammond organ & tape. After the success of the long-delayed premiere of his opera Die Soldaten in 1966, German composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann turned his attention to what would become his boldest musical statement, the Requiem für einen jungen Dichter (Requiem for a young poet). It is a 65-minute score for huge forces, including a narrator, two vocal soloists, three choruses, full orchestra (minus the high strings), two pianos, Hammond organ, and a jazz combo.

It was impressive indeed and quite a peculiar choice for an introduction (Kent Nagano choice's).
