Released in October of 1957, West Side Story (Original Broadway Cast), features the cast and vocals of the original Broadway production of West Side Story, and was recorded three days after the show opened. West Side Story is modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, set in the Upper West Sides of Manhattan in the middle of the 20th century

West Side Story is a musical with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood (in the early 1960s, much of the neighborhood was cleared in an urban renewal project for Lincoln Center, which changed the neighborhood's character).

Album West Side Story (Original Broadway Cast Recording). Puerto Rico You lovely island Island of tropical breezes Always the pineapples growing Always the coffee blossoms blowing. This song is from West Side Story, a Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents from 1957. What have the artists said about the song? From Sondheim’s Finishing the Hat: I had underestimated the speed of the music, which turned the collision of consonants into major crashes.
