The Cook County Jail is in Chicago and at the time the album was recorded (September 10, 1970) it was regarded as one of the most violent and dangerous jails in the United States. The inmate population at the time consisted of 2,117 inmates. At the time of the Cook County recording . King had already had successful career 20 year career. 1956 hit Three O'Clock Blues is featured as well as The Thrill Is Gone. recorded the latter on his 1969 album Completely Well and it became a hit in December of that year. The Thrill Is Gone is . s biggest hit and, consequently, has become his signature song. At the time of the Cook County recording, it was a fresh hit that many of the inmates would certainly been aware of. The band is in fine form on the recording. King was enjoying a career renaissance when he played this Chicago jail in 1970. He won over the hostile prisoners with definitive versions of his blues standards and his crossover hit The Thrill Is Gone. The third album by Jack and Meg White was the right dynamite for a mainstream breakthrough.
