This is generally my go-to album for the best of the neo-Mod/Mod revival bands of the late 70s/early 80s. Outside of The Jam (who are more of an institution), there were about a dozen bands such as The Lambrettas, The Chords, Purple Hearts, and Squire that were also mining the sharp-edged modernist power pop thing in the UK at the time. There were a lot of mediocre or just plain okay bands at the time but plenty of great singles. This album (which I can boast that a former mod pal of mine once rode me on the back of his Lambretta in the 90s just to grab a spare copy from a shop) manages to balance the style and attitude with strong songwriting and a tight group, edging out quite a few others in this short-lived fad. "Glory Boys" is a bold "statement of purpose" track, "Going To A Go-Go" a nice 60's beat romp, and "Time For Action" a catchy and defiant pop tune. There's a certain edge this band had, a classic modernist aloofness that felt very genuine and has actually aged rather well. This debut album actually had a lot to back up the vibe they were putting out. Possibly THE mod revival album to grab if you have to pick one....... and you've already got pretty much everything The Jam ever did.
