The album spoofed President John F. Kennedy – who was played by Meader – and became the fastest selling "pre-Beatles" album in history and went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1963. At the peak of his popularity, he performed his Kennedy impersonation on variety shows and in nightclubs around the country and was profiled in several magazines. was released in late 1964, and included sketches on almost everything except the Kennedys, but sales were meager at best. Meader's income evaporated, new-found friends and associates stopped calling, and by 1965 Meader was virtually broke. Sinking into depression, he became addicted to alcohol and drugs, and was forced to take whatever work he could find.

Says "If The Shoe Fits. Sort name: Meader, Vaughn. Died: 2004-10-29 (aged 68).
On the 1962 comedy album 'The First Family,' the Kennedy family was satirized by Vaughn Meader, a previously obscure standup comedian. It was an unprecedented phenomenon for a record, selling millions of copies and receiving radio airplay - people couldn't get enough of this loving and funny tribute to John F. Kennedy, his wife Jackie Kennedy, and their children John Jr. and Caroline. Parodying a sitting president was oddly controversial back then, and when Kennedy was assassinated the following year, all unsold records were destroyed. He released comedy albums Have Some Nuts!!! and If The Shoe Fits in 1964; they flopped. Bookings dried up and big-shot celebrity friends stopped calling. Meader, it seems, reminded people of the tragedy and elicited pity from strangers on the street - not a good look for one who hopes to succeed at comedy. He'd spent the million he made off the album by 1965.
